Week 4 Reflection and Report

In the fourth week of my Digital Methodology course, I focused on understanding and applying digital tools in research. The main theme was to integrate these tools into practical projects, particularly through creating a webpage that showcases our methodological research.

The week began with selecting a module and learning HTML basics. I chose Cultural Analytics, intrigued by the possibilities of visualizing data from films and analyzing textual content in a digital context. I also embarked on my HTML learning journey using resources from Codecademy and W3Schools.

Throughout the process, I encountered the intricacies of tags, elements, and document structure, which helped me understand how digital content is structured and displayed online. Throughout the week I dove deeper into both Cultural Analytics and HTML, aiming to leverage them effectively in my methodology project.

I then focused on practical applications of digital methodologies, engaging deeply with digital tools for film visualization and text analysis. I chose to analyze “Moana”, exploring insights from thousands of extracted images without needing to watch the entire film. In parallel, I ventured into text analysis using Voyant Tools, focusing on “Percy Jackson The Lightning Thief” and “Normal People” By uploading the text files, I experimented with various visualizations and analytical tools offered by Voyant, gaining valuable insights into textual patterns and themes within the novel.

These practical exercises reinforced the importance of digital methodologies in research, showing how digital tools can streamline and enhance the analysis process, offering new perspectives and deeper understandings of complex data sets. With a solid foundation in film visualization and text analysis, I am eager to integrate these insights into my methodology project.

I then took a significant step forward as I began crafting a webpage to showcase my research methodology and findings using HTML and CSS. I thoroughly reviewed HTML and CSS fundamentals, meticulously structuring the page with a title, descriptive paragraphs outlining my research process, and integrated images and links to related resources. CSS, or Cascading Style Sheets, played a pivotal role in enhancing the visual appeal and usability of the webpage.

Throughout the week, many challenges arose, such as debugging code errors and ensuring cross-browser compatibility. However, each challenge provided an opportunity for growth and learning. Reflecting on the progress made, I am proud of the strides made in understanding digital methodologies and applying them practically. There was also a focus will be on refining design elements, ensuring seamless navigation and accessibility, and synthesizing findings and insights into a cohesive narrative.

The assignments for this week closely complemented the learning objectives of the course, such as comprehending and utilizing digital tools for research and proficiently disseminating research findings via a methodology webpage. I was adept at using and using digital technologies, especially for text analysis and movie visualization. Additionally, I Struggled so much with this weeks project but somehow prevailed which I think demonstrates how my technical proficiency with HTML and CSS has grown. It is possible to enhance methodological research capabilities by investigating more digital technologies and honing CSS skills for advanced design strategies. I think I deserve an A- for this week , just for all the stress and frustration I went through.
